THE BACKSTAGE HAND CLINIC

The hand clinic for the performing musicians
and all those whose hands make great music!

  • Instagram

The Backstage Hand Clinic is a specialist hand clinic in central London dedicated to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of hand and upper limb conditions affecting performing musicians.

Musicians rely on exceptional precision, endurance, and coordination. Even minor pain, stiffness, weakness, or altered sensation can have a significant impact on performance. Our clinic is designed specifically for performers, combining specialist hand expertise with an understanding of the unique physical demands of professional and amateur musicians. Lorenzo Garagnani, the founder of the clinic, is not only a world-recognised hand expert but also a music expert and has a performing musician background.

A performance-based assessment

What makes The Backstage Hand Clinic different is our performance-focused approach.

Rather than assessing your symptoms in isolation, we evaluate your hands while you perform on your own instrument whenever possible.
By observing technique, posture, movement patterns, and the specific demands of performance, we can identify problems that may not be apparent during a conventional clinical examination. This allows for a more accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your individual playing style.

Conditions assessed at The Backstage Hand Clinic

We can assist with a wide range of conditions affecting musicians, including:
• Overuse and repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
• Tendon disorders and tendonitis
• Trigger fingers and thumb
• Thumb, fingers and wrist pain and arthritis
• Lumps and bumps (including ganglia and benign lesions)
• Nerve compression and altered sensation in the upper limb (including carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome and other conditions affecting the median, ulnar and radial nerves)
• Hand and wrist stiffness and reduced dexterity
• Performance-related pain
• Recovery following hand injuries or surgery

Specialist care tailored to musicians

Our assessment considers not only your medical condition but also:
• Specific instrument features and playing technique
• Practice and rehearsal schedules
• Performance requirements
• Occupational demands
• Injury prevention strategies
• Safe return to rehearsals, concerts, and touring

Treatment plans are individualised and may include education, splinting, hand therapy and occupational therapy, exercise programmes, activity modification, surgery and referral for further investigations or additional specialist treatment where appropriate.
